What’s with the TV depiction of a publicist?

First there was Samantha in Sex and The City and now… Serena in Gossip Girl.

In the show, Serena, who graduates high school planning to Brown, decides to defer her college experience and take some time to “find herself” and experience the “real world.”

First of all, if this is taking place in the present day no one in their right mind would willing pass up school to go look for a job… NO ONE.

So Serena, through her crazy experiences and encounters, gets offered, right off the bat, a job as a celebrity publicity.

In today’s world it really is all about who you know but come on…

What makes me the most upset is how these publicist characters are just stereotyped to be crazy manipulating truth spinners who are looking for press.. not matter what the outlook.

It’s disappointing to think that is how people see those in the publicity field.

According to EW Popwatch (that I normally LOVE):

But Serena just doesn’t seem like a publicist to me; that job reeks of Blair Waldorf.

And while, yes, the point was Serena was young and naive, but knew how to be a friend and do the right thing.. blah blah blah… does that mean that a publicist is supposed to be a stuck up bitch?

Being a publicist takes tenacity, persistence, patience and a thick skin and it really is craft that one does not learn over night or by the age of 18.

And scene.

Something about California has lessened my desire to blog.

Wait, that’s not true.

I want to blog and I have some good stuff to blog about too.

My theory: the abundance of sunshine has spiked my Vitamin D levels and thus resulting in my lack of motivation.. whatever, I don’t even know what Vitamin D does. (something for your bones? Wait, that’s calcium)

Anyway, that coupled with my job search which has resulted in my slow descent into an abyss….

The angry LA sun has wilted me, the flower.

Really?! I Graduated?! (again?!)

Last Sunday I walked in the Boston University College of Communication Commencement Ceremony with the class of 2009.

Looking back, I am really glad to have made that memory because I almost didn’t.

Having graduated in January and receiving my diploma in the mail, I really did not care about walking. My mother, however, did care, and I decided to walk for the validation of the almost $200K my parents spent on my education. Plus, I was in Boston anyway so why not…

The weekend turned out to be great and all sappiness aside, I felt really proud to be wearing that cap and gown. While I had graduated some 5 months ago, it really didn’t hit me until then.

Now the hard part really comes… moving on, having a life plan, becoming an adult.

How can I become an adult?
\The girl who looks like a 12-yr-old (and sometimes talks in the voice of a 6-yr-old).
\The girl who falls asleep on stoops or Christmas lights?
\The girl who still doesn’t know her limits?
\The girl who still dreams of seeing her name in lights?

Recently, I have just wanted to freeze time and jump ship to Neverneverland and join the lost boys, hang out with Rufio.

For the girl who likes having a plan, my future is so up in the air that I need someone to pull me back down to the ground.

With my apartment in boxes, I bid you farewell, Boston– you have been good to me.

Who knows where the wind will blow me these days, but I’ll be sure to let you know where I land…

Cheers Class of 2009. Best of luck to you all.

Did I predict the downfall of the Newspaper?

With all the talk in the recent months about the downfall of the newspaper, particularly being in Boston with the Globe, I decided to posted a video I made in the Fall of 2007 in my Computers in Communication class. In this video I suggest the virtual disappearance of print media, replaced by a digital future.

Let’s face it, with the cost of advertising and the rise of social media, print media, specifically newspapers are struggling.

Check out the video below. I was clearly ahead of the curve.

More on the subject, check out Newspaper Death Watch.

What’s with the stories about hidden cocaine?

Hot Topic: Hidden Cocaine

Example 1:
Courtesy of NY Post (found via The Consumerist) COKE STASHED IN DOCTORED PEPPER So the title of this news story is not to be confused with “Doctor Pepper” the tasty beverage, as I mistakenly read it (then again, that’s the ny post for ya). So these “doctored” peppers were sold in (prepared your shock and awe face) Queens and the owners said the peppers originated from (shock and awe face again) South America. I’m sure who ever was expecting that coke went to the wrong store or was a day early or bought the red peppers when it was in the green peppers. My favorite part of the story is the comments from the 3 of the 4 people who read this story (the 4th being myself), the most reccommended being “that’s like hitting the lotto”

comments1

Example 2: Courtesy of Slate (hat tip to my friend Erica for this one) Break a Leg! As the article goes..Spanish authorities arrested a man wearing a cast of compressed cocaine at the Barcelona airport last Wednesday. Here’s the kicker though– the guy was obviously so desperate to get this coke that he broke his leg so he could make his coke cast.. REALLY?! What I love about this Slate article is the extensive detail they go into about how to break one’s tibia:

To do the trick, you’ll first want to strap the leg to a fixed object—a cinderblock, maybe—below the knee and above the ankle. That will prevent your joints from buckling before the tibia breaks. Then you’ll want to choose the heaviest, smallest weapon with which you can reliably hit your target—a hammer would be more effective than a mallet, for example. The wound is likely to be quite unpleasant, so you might consider drugs to alleviate the pain. (Cocaine wouldn’t be a good choice, though—its analgesic effects are highly localized.)

If you ever wanted to know how to break your tibia, there ya go. What also may come in handy? The bonus explainer at the bottom. Now you can make your own coke cast too!

…Really?

An open letter to the blogosphere

Blogosphere:

I am really sorry having neglected you for so long; however, I would like you to know I’m back.

I want to make my intentions clear. I intend to commit myself to pithy commentary on the absurdities of this world be they spaghetti cats or pot-smoking Olympic swimmers.

I wish could explain more but I fear I have to go for it is 2:00 am and my battery is at 15% because my power cord is not working…. REALLY?!

Yours Truly,

Kelly
